Casey Jacobs: Medicine & Ministry

Casey Jacobs is a certified registered nurse anesthetist, working for Southwest Anesthesia Services Inc. at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. He completed his seminary internship in with Emmanuel Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio and is now prayerfully considering his next steps in ministry. The full-time, paid internship is built right into Baptist Bible Seminary’s Master of Divinity program, providing a unique, practical experience for seminary students.

Jacobs’ internship provided professional development and practical ministry training in a local church with the goal of acquiring real-life ministry experiences.

Jacobs was able to incorporate his spiritual gift of teaching in his role at Emmanuel Baptist, and he developed a discipleship curriculum for the church. He taught the material to his Sunday school class in preparation for a church-wide launch this year. He also helped with sermon preparation for the senior pastor, officiated in a variety of church services and mobilized people for two major mission trips, one of which was a unique ministry that tied in his medical skill set.

Jacobs organized and lead a team of healthcare professionals to serve alongside medical missionaries in Togo, West Africa. The project served to promote missions in the church and to expand their global footprint by mobilizing an untapped resource of healthcare professionals to serve on the mission field. This project also allowed the church to deepen their connection with missionaries already serving in Togo and to experience first-hand how the church has impacted the medical evangelism and church planting efforts there.

“I think the BBS internship is such a valuable experience because it provides a caring, structured environment to learn and apply theological training to real life ministry experiences,” stated Jacobs. He appreciated the BBS faculty, who not only conveyed a tremendous amount of biblical knowledge but also shared a life of ministry experience. In addition, they genuinely care about the students and seek to help them in life and ministry.

Jacobs would recommend BBS to others because “the practical internship is such a unique learning experience that really helps to put hands and feet to the abundance of knowledge that is obtained in seminary.”

He learned throughout his internship that there is no substitute for good leadership when it comes to effectively serving the Lord and His church. Strong leadership helps maintain unity in the church, provides vision in accomplishing the mission and strengthens the body by encouraging and developing future ministry leaders.
