Success For Students At Golf Classic

Published May 24, 2016

77 golfers hit the green on a sunny, 75-degree day at Glen Oak Country Club in Clarks Summit. More than just a great day of golf at an 18-hole, championship caliber course, the Clarks Summit University Golf Classic on May 23 raised over $63,000 for student scholarships.

RAISING THE BAR FOR STUDENTS

“The Golf Classic is the most successful fundraiser in the history of Clarks Summit University,” says Lisa Konzelman, vice president of institutional advancement. “The golfers and sponsors value the first-class quality of the tournament, their golf experience at Glen Oak Country Club and meeting students and staff from Summit University.” Now in its 12th year, the annual fundraiser broke the million-dollar fundraising mark. All funds directly benefit students through scholarships.

This year, six new sponsors and 10 new golfers joined longtime supporters like platinum sponsor Lindsey Equipment and Diamond Sponsors DataPipe, Wayne Bank and Coca-Cola. The golfers were even more generous than in the past, setting a giving record at the President’s Hole, where $5 bought an extra Best Ball tee shot from Lee Kliewer, executive director of the president’s office.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“A college degree is just about the best way to ensure a great start in life,” says Clarks Summit University President Dr. Jim Lytle. “When we can reduce the cost of education for our students, we take something great and make it greater!”

“Enhancing friendships through golf while helping students is a win-win day!” agrees Sprint Print’s Bill Stevens.

Clarks Summit University students were on hand to help and thank golfers and sponsors. Domingo Rodriguez, a sophomore Intercultural Youth Ministries major from West Palm Beach, Florida, appreciated meeting the people who help make a Summit University education more affordable.“It amazes me that these men and women are generous enough to support us in any way they can. Little do they realize how much easier they make it for many of us, and it’s comforting to know that there are still people like that in the world.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY

In addition to golf, participants enjoyed lunch, dinner, snacks and chances to win electronics, tickets to local events and other prizes.

Golfers also met Brady Lail, pitcher for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders and Triple A affiliate of the New York Yankees, who attended with a member of the Golf Classic planning committee. “It was great to spend time with him, get his perspective on baseball and watch him hit a few off the tee!” says Dr. Lytle.

Clarks Summit University alumnus Ron Paull, president of Keystone Retirement Resources; David Epstein, lead pastor of First Baptist Church of NYC, and Chuck Jacobs were the winning team. Longest drive went to Dena Cambra (women), Ron Phelps (senior) and JC Show (Men). John Baranowski achieved closest to the pin at 6’4”.
