Giving Students More Options

Published May 11, 2016

At Clarks Summit University, we believe God has gifted each student to serve in unique ways in His global harvest. Because these students plan to go into diverse careers that require specific skills, they are now able to build their undergraduate education to better meet their specific professional and ministry goals.

Following a recent change to the school’s undergraduate academic programs, Clarks Summit University students are better able to customize their academic experience. Students now have more freedom to add courses that will effectively prepare them for their specific goals, more openings to transfer in credits from other schools and more electives to customize their learning.

“The reaction from our current students has been very positive,” notes Dr. Bill Higley, vice president for academics. “They appreciate the flexibility. Giving students more room to add a minor and choose from high-quality electives is something we are happy to offer.”

In keeping with Clarks Summit University’s mission and commitment to Biblical higher education, every student will continue to have a Bible major, with at least 30 hours of Bible, theology and ministry credits required for graduation. Clarks Summit University’s programs will also continue to provide high-quality academics in targeted majors, with at least 38 credit hours dedicated to program-specific courses.

Clarks Summit University students now have the opportunity to complete a minor of their choice to enhance their degree and skill set. For example, a Youth Pastoral major can add a minor in Communications; a Business Administration major can add a minor in Intercultural Studies. Education majors will now be able to earn a valuable minor in English as a Second Language or Special Education within a typical four-year timeframe.

The new curricular changes will allow some exceptional students to earn a degree in less time; in some cases a degree can be earned in as little as three years. Students pursuing this reduced time frame must meet specific GPA requirements.

These changes were implemented to help students move directly into careers and ministries, and to allow students to tailor their education so they will graduate with targeted skills for whatever God has for them.
